Gun Violence Leaves Philadelphia's Black Youth at Risk
Gun violence in the United States has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the latest edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association. What's more, that violence hits Black children from the nation's four major cities — including Philadelphia — 100 times more than usual. Philadelphia is described in the report as “the city with more than one million population with the highest firearm homicide rate.”
What can only be seen as a national crisis — our youth between the ages of 12-34 are losing their lives at a higher rate than ever before. According to national statistics from the Gun Violence Archive in the United States, African American children are dramatically affected: “Black kids are about five times as likely as white kids to die from gunfire.”
Young people make up a larger share of gun violence victims than ever before. This is why it is so crucial that we invest in prevention-based programming which keeps students and young people active, healthy and safe in a controlled, productive environment. A Home Is A Right — AHARI has been a beacon of light in a city that has been in the dark due to the high homicide rate. At AHARI's youth programs held at The NET, youth have found a safe place that has allowed them to bloom under the sunny disposition of the programs offered through its WRAP programs.
Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) is a wellness tool that our youth can use to get well, stay well, and make their life more the way they want it to be. Our youth are the future of Philadelphia, and we want to help build them up, so that they can build us up in the future.
This year's cohort has focused on conflict resolution, financial literacy, community outreach, resume building, S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound), and they learned to write their wellness plans. We are proud of all who have taken part in our classes.
We would like to highlight one of our special youths, Isyis, who has put into her own words, through poetry, what AHARI and this cohort has meant to her.
